Marches Fungi

Reports

HOT NEWS!

Morels are up and about, in some places in

vast numbers!  We have had reports from all

over the Marches region of morels being

found in late April.  Keep your eyes peeled,

especially on areas of recently disturbed

ground and where woodchips have been

    used for mulching.

The unusual Cedar Cup fungus was spotted in early

February this year - it does not tend to be around until

       at least mid March!

Silent Valley Nature Reserve in Gwent

The rare Tiered Tooth fungus 'Hericium cirrhatum' was    spotted last July on a felled beech trunk. This unusual fungus was until very recently on the Red Data List but has now been removed in the recently updated version.

However,  it is as far as we can see a first record not just for Gwent but also for Wales!

Thanks to Gwent Wildlife Trust for sending along photos, in particular Richard Bakere who looks after the site and took the wonderful photos, not forgetting Julian Branscombe who spotted the fungus in the first place.

Amazingly this unusual fungus had a second fruiting.  Spotted by George Spence during a survey by the Gwent Fungus Group in September this rare fungus, originally recorded in July - is found once again fruiting in September. A hugely exciting and unusual event!
